These majestic animals and their pristine habitats are under threat.
Local peoples want to protect their environment and their ancestral ways of living.
Conventional government-led conservation efforts are failing.
Through community-led conservation, we can support the dignity of local peoples, improve governance, and save the wild nature on which our planetary health depends.

A Land of Incomparable BeautyA land "so rare and surprising in its beauty," "so rich with life that it seems entirely possible that Life itself started here, or at least that it congregated here in uncommon splendor and diversity." — Zambia's North Luangwa Valley as described by award-winning author Alexandra Fuller.

The Community takes the LeadIn a dramatic reversal of business as usual, the initiative to create the Mukungule Conservancy is coming from local communities themselves. Government, civil society groups, research institutions, eco-business entrepreneurs and others are coming enthusiastically on board.

An Inclusive Approach
Local initiators are planning an inclusive, whole-system approach. To establish the Conservancy and its governance model, over 60 participants, carefully selected to include a full range of stakeholders, will meet for 3 to 5 days to create a shared vision and implementation plan with broad community ownership. They will use an innovative methodology called Future Search.
